Peelout Porter Testimonials
Dear Tom,
Many thanks for the bottle of Peelout Porter. To try it, I bought
some good pastrami and baby swiss, then built a sandwich on some
of my wife's freshly baked white bread. (Real white bread, that is,
not the tasteless stuff you get in the store.) Then, the porter,
decanted gently into a tall glass. It had a nice head - creamy,
and not too tall; and enough carbonation to enliven the mouth, but
not enough to make the brew "fizzy". I had it a little warmer than
you recommend, mainly because I prefer my beer on the warm side, so
it doesn't numb the palate; but that's me.
Then the tasting: it was delicious. It complemented the sandwich
nicely, but didn't overwhelm it the way, say, Guinness will. And there's
no "beery" aftertaste, such as some more strongly flavored brews
leave. Peelout Porter reminds me of Labatt's Cream Porter, which
I used to drink when I was studying in Toronto - and I have no higher
praise for a porter.
My warmest compliments to the brewmaster!
Hey, Tom...
Just popped open that bottle of Porter, and thought I'd give you my second
impression.
The carbonation level is actually approaching normal, with what I would
consider to be very good head retention for an extract beer (extract beers
sometimes suffer from lack of head retention). It is definitely somewhere on
the Mild/Brown Ale/Porter continuum. I'd probably peg it as a Southern English
Brown, or possibly a Brown Porter. I think it is just a little bit too strong
to be a Mild, and not quite roasty enough to be a Robust Porter. Nice drinkable
beer.
Hi Tom,
Had a chance to finally give your Peelout Porter a try. I was
immediately impressed with its overall balance. A good head, very
smooth, and a great finish. A brew more subtle than most porters I've
tasted which I often find too heavy and blunt. On the other hand, if I
were to offer any criticism, I'd say it was perhaps a touch too mild on
its own, but excellent with food (I had it with assorted cheeses).
Perhaps a nudge in either direction would give it some added character.
Looking forward to trying your Slick Stout and 4-Barrel Brown!
Tom-
Thanks so much for allowing us to assess the potability of your latest
brews.
The stout was a unanimous hit. I personally believe it to be the best
stout I have ever tasted - strong, but not harsh at all.
Second was the brown barrel ale. Very smooth, a
little sweet - quite the genteel drink.
Porter was also very good.
All parties left the session in considerably improved frame of mind.
The porter had a nice sharp taste. It also had a really nice dark
brown color - not cloudy though. It had enough bitterness to be just shy
of a stout - just perfect. It was not overly bitter and totally devoid
of the aftertaste that can sometimes accompany bitterness. The taste
was great.
